Resumo | According to the Brazilian official deforestation program (PRODES), the 2021 deforestation rate of the Brazilian Legal Amazon (BLA) achieved the highest value since 2006 (13,038 km2). While suffering increasing pressure from anthropogenic activities, protected areas of the BLA, such as Indigenous Lands (Ils), consist of an additional barrier to protect the standing forests. Nevertheless, the single establishment of Ils is not enough to stop illegal deforestation in these protected areas. In 2021, PRODES estimated 365 km2 of deforestation in Ils of the BLA. This value is 40% above the average of the 2008-2021 period. In this presentation, we will discuss how the weaking of the Brazilian environmental laws and their enforcement triggers several disturbances in Ils, such as deforestation fires, selective logging, and illegal mining, jeopardizing the traditional Amazonians. Strategies based on machine learning and remote sensing land cover mapping will also be discussed, as well as the role of the Ils on mantaining important ecosystem services in the region. To reverse the current scenario in the Amazon over the long-term, environmental education is key, as is the implementation of sustainable agricultural practices and development of conservation policies to promote forest regrowth in degraded areas. In the short term, appropriate federal government agencies in Brazil and other Amazonian nations should act swiftly to reduce illegal deforestation and combat rising anti-indigenous violence in Ils, sending a strong message that these protected areas are legally controlled and monitored, in order to stop future invasions. Only such changes will enable the maintenance of environmental stability in Amazonia, contain further deforestation and degradation, and, most importantly, safeguard Indigenous and traditional peoples long-term well-being, ways of life, and cultural heritages. |
